Why Choose Dental Sedation?

Fear of the dentist is incredibly common, and without the right support, it can prevent people from getting the care they need. Dental sedation helps ease those fears, making it easier to receive important treatments without stress or discomfort. It’s especially helpful for:

  • Children with dental anxiety or sensory sensitivity
  • Adults who avoid care due to fear
  • Patients with special needs
  • Those undergoing multiple or lengthy procedures

Sedation Dentistry Options

We offer several sedation options to meet your family’s unique needs:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Dental Services for KidsPatients inhale this mild sedative through a soft nose mask. In just a few minutes, patients feel calm and comfortable, without being fully asleep. Nitrous oxide is completely safe for both children and adults, and its effects wear off quickly, so you can return to your daily routine right after your visit.

Ask about nitrous oxide during your child’s next appointment!

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral Conscious SedationFor patients who need to feel more relaxed, we offer oral sedation as a pill taken before the appointment. This type of sedation helps ease moderate to severe anxiety and often causes partial memory loss of the visit.

Patients remain awake but deeply relaxed. A parent, guardian, or loved one will need to drive the patient home afterward.

General Anesthesia (Sleep Dentistry)

General Anesthesia (“Sleep Dentistry”)In cases where nitrous oxide or oral sedation isn’t enough, especially for children with high anxiety or special needs, we offer general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Our experienced team partners with pediatric anesthesiologists to ensure complete safety and comfort.

The dental team completes the full treatment in one visit while the patient remains fully asleep.

FAQs About Sedation Dentistry

Sedation DentistryWe know that choosing a kids sedation dentist involves a lot of trust. Here are answers to some of the most common questions parents ask us:

How Can I Help My Child Prepare?

  • Bring a favorite toy or blanket for comfort
  • Offer words of encouragement before the visit
  • Stay calm—your child will follow your lead

What Happens After the Appointment?

After dental sedation, your child may feel sleepy, fussy, or slightly nauseous. These effects are temporary and fade as the sedation wears off. Our team will invite you back to the treatment room to be with your child during recovery.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Children with Special Needs?

Yes. Many children with autism or other developmental conditions benefit from sedation during dental care. Our team takes extra time to understand each patient’s needs and will recommend the best type of sedation for your child.

What Does the Process Look Like?

Before treatment, we’ll review your child’s medical history and explain exactly what to expect. Our team administers sedation either through a pill or a nose mask. Throughout the procedure, we closely monitor heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels to ensure your child’s safety.

You can play a part in preparing your child for his or her first visit to our office. Informing your child of the visit as an exciting experience for both of you can ease any hesitations. As a parent try to act relaxed, since your child may sense any anxiety on your part.

Explain to your child that the doctor will “count, brush, and maybe take pictures of their teeth”. We also ask that you assume the role of a silent observer. Cooperation and trust must be established directly between the doctor, staff, and your child and not through you. Your child may become confused if receiving instructions from multiple sources.

We recommend bringing your baby in for their first dental appointment by their first birthday, or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing (whichever comes first). During this appointment, we will examine your baby’s mouth to track their dental development and discuss age-appropriate dental care.

It’s easy to make appointments to visit our office online or over the phone. Rio Dental sees patients both for checkups and dental emergencies. Using our online scheduler, you can select the location and time slot that works best for you for either type of appointment. If you have any questions regarding our practice, or simply prefer to make your appointment with a live member of staff, please don’t hesitate to call!

Rio Dental Group accepts most PPO insurances. We recommend that new patients and returning patients with new insurance policies reach out to us before their appointment to confirm coverage. Our Fort Worth location also sees patients who are covered by Medicaid and CHIP programs.

We don’t like surprises, either! Our staff is prepared to discuss the cost of dental services before you undergo treatment so that you know what to expect in terms of fees. The cost of your services will be due at the end of your appointment. Our office accepts payment by cash, credit card, or check.

Rio Dental Group allows patients to pay with their CareCredit card. CareCredit is a healthcare credit card designed to cover out-of-pocket costs at over 225,000 providers nationwide. After leaving the office, card holders will be able to make convenient monthly payments towards their balance. To learn more, visit the CareCredit website.
