Parents who have dental insurance should know one thing: finding a dentist that accepts your plan is very important for maximizing your child’s benefits (and your investment in your family’s oral health). At Rio Dental, we are pleased to be in-network with all dental insurance PPOs. Our team of experts will always help you make the most out of what your child is eligible for under your dental insurance plan!
How Dental Insurance Works
Most dental insurance plans work on a fee-for-service basis. You or your employer will pay upfront for coverage on treatments you and your family may need throughout the year. When you visit an in-network dentist, or one who has come to an agreement with the provider to offer predetermined discounts on care for the patient, you pay either nothing or a portion of the amount of the service being rendered.
Most dental insurance is based on a scale that looks like this:
- Preventive dental care: 100% covered. This includes two checkups and cleanings per year with a set of X-rays annually. Children may be eligible for fluoride or dental sealants as well.
- Restorative dental care: 50% to 80% covered. Basic care, like a routine filling, is 80% covered. More complex treatments, like root canal therapy or surgical extractions, are usually covered by half.
- Cosmetic dentistry and elective treatments are usually not covered by dental insurance.

Making the Most Out of Your Investment
Maximizing your insurance benefits is a great way to make sure that your child grows up with a clean, healthy smile. Dental caries (aka cavities) are the most common childhood disease -- but with your insurance plan’s preventive coverage, you can help to avoid them altogether.
When you contact Rio Dental, we will perform a verification of benefits to find out just what your child is eligible for in that calendar year. Based on this information, we will get started figuring out how to help you make the most out of your plan. The most important thing is to schedule two checkups and cleanings per year. With these regular visits, we can help your little one avoid the need for fillings and other restorative care altogether.
