Questions about pediatric dentistry
It’s possible you may not be familiar with pediatric dentistry. If so, here are answers to some commonly asked questions.
What is a pediatric dentist and how are they trained?
Stated simply, pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dental care. After completing their undergraduate studies, all dentists spend four years in dental school. After that, pediatric dentists get an additional two years of training during which they specialize in the oral health of children and teens. Through this regimen of highly specialized training, a pediatric dentist is able to care for and guide children through their years of dental growth and help minimize their future dental issues.
Are my child’s baby teeth important?
Yes, your child’s baby teeth are important to their growth and future oral health. Among other things, those first teeth help your child eat and develop proper speech patterns. Baby teeth also hold space in the jaw for the eruption and alignment of the permanent teeth that replace them.
Should cavities in baby teeth be filled?
Absolutely, those cavities should be treated as soon as possible. While it’s true that most baby teeth will be lost by age 12, given their importance in your child’s early development it’s essential to take good care of them in order to promote the future dental health of your children. If left untreated, a cavity can damage most of the teeth and require a root canal.
When should I schedule my child’s first dental visit?
To prevent childhood dental problems and establish a regular dental home, we strongly suggest that you schedule your child’s first appointment shortly after their first teeth appears and no later than their first birthday.
During this first visit one of our pediatric dental specialists will provide information on basic dental care for your child and perform a thorough examination of their teeth and gums to make sure there are no already existing problems. After that initial visit, as in the case of teens and adults, we recommend a cleaning and examination every six months.
